The Ford C4 and C6 automatic transmissions have been equipped in millions of production rear-wheel drive cars and trucks since they were introduced in the 1960s (C4 in 1964, C6 in 1966). They remained in production deep into the 1980s, when overdrive-equipped transmissions finally eclipsed them. However, the C4 and C6 remain incredibly popular with enthusiasts, racers, and restorers alike due to their simplicity, strength, and low cost.

Rebuilding either of these transmissions isn’t overly difficult, but does require care, some specialized tools, and proper procedure to be followed closely. In How to Rebuild and Modify Ford C4 and C6 Automatic Transmissions, author George Reid walks readers through the process step-by-step, from removing the transmission from the vehicle, to complete disassembly and cleaning, to careful reassembly, to proper re-installation and road testing. In addition, if the transmission will be used in a high-performance or competition situation, the author includes the various steps required to bolster the unit’s strength, using commonly available aftermarket components.

Each chapter contains special notes, sidebars, and technical tips to assist the reader at every step in the process. Some refer to safety, others to time-saving advice, and others to small modifications that may aid long-term durability or help the builder tailor the shift firmness. The author’s extensive research and experience with these popular transmissions has resulted in a well-rounded full-color technical guide to their revitalization.

History

This is the C4 Dual-Range shift pattern for 1964–1966, with a large green dot for normal drive (1-2-3 upshifts) and a smaller dot for second gear only (driving on snow and ice).

C4 Disassembly

Ford’s C4 and C6 transmissions are among the easiest in the industry to rebuild in your home garage. Transmission shops have special spring compressors for clutch disassembly; however, you can do this at home with four C-clamps. This makes it easy to remove the C-clip.

C4 Assembly

The forward planet carrier is meshed into the ring gear, which is seated into the forward clutch. (Note: the reverse planet carrier and reverse-high clutch cylinder are already assembled).

C6 Disassembly and Inspection

Forward planet carrier from this mid-1970s C6 is aluminum for weight reduction. Expect to see iron or aluminum. As with the C4’s forward planet, inspect planet gears for wear and damage. There should be no oscillation around each planet gear’s centerline or resistance to being turned.

C6 Assembly

Alternate clutches and steels with this clutch friction being first after the wavy washer. This particular forward clutch gets five frictions and four steels. There are three selective snap-ring thicknesses for setting forward clutch clearances: .065 to .069, .074 to .078, and .083 to .087 inch.

Performance Upgrades

The TCI Automotive Trans-Scat valve body kit (PN 360000) is simple in scope. Where it gets complicated is modifications that have to be made to the valve body that require drilling. You must pay very close attention to detail here because once you drill, there’s no turning back. If you drill wrong, you have scrap or a potentially serious transmission malfunction.

Customers say

Customers find the book informative and helpful for learning about Ford C4 transmissions. They appreciate the nice pictures and detailed photos of the re-building process. Many customers consider it a good value for money and a useful resource for repair and modification work on Ford C4 transmissions, providing clear instructions and common sense guidance. However, some readers feel there aren’t enough detailed photos or illustrations of the transmissions in detail, which is disappointing.
